MULTAN, Pakistan. A gang-rape victim who shunned custom and rose to global fame by speaking out about her case has defied another local taboo – she just got married.

Mukhtar Mai is now married to Nasir Abbas Gabol, a police officer who was assigned to protect her as her case gained notoriety. He said she was reluctant to accept his offer and that he threatened suicide when she turned him down.

Tecuci, Romania --A sedated lion is placed in a container for shipping to a feline sanctuary in South Africa.
The lion, Cezar, was housed in a Romanian zoo that has closed. His transfer, along with two other lions, was organized by an animal rights foundation.
Some Romanian zoos, unable to afford to meet international standards of animal care, are closing or downsizing.

Pul-i-Khumri, Afghanistan, -Miners clean up after a day's work at the Karkar coal mine. 
Producing about a hundred tons of coal daily, the mine, about 105 miles (170 kilometers) north of Kabul, employs 280 workers, each earning the equivalent of U.S. $70 to $100 a month.
